Smart cards enable information to be stored on the chip, which can be used for identification and verification. Two-factor authentication is widely used, whereby a smart card is inserted into a reader and then a PIN is additionally required for access. This authentication method is particularly popular for logical access control. Both physical and logical access requirements can be incorporated within one smart card.

TECHNOLOGIES TO CONSIDER
There are a number of smart card technologies considered for physical access control; these are:
This technology historically has been widely used by the majority of today's access control solutions and is based on firm industry standards. The technology is ‘read only’ and therefore the on-card solutions are very limited.
ISO14443 and ISO15693 Technologies
These smart cards are truly ‘smart' and intelligent. They allow for read/write devices and are capable of storing different kinds of data on the card and operating at different ranges (Typically 5cm to 5m). One example of ISO14443 is MIFARE, which has been widely produced by both NXP and Infineon. The advantage of this technology is that it allows for multiple applications on one card. Many cashless vending and loyalty integrators are now supporting this technology.
PERSONALIZE YOUR PHYSICAL ACCESS CARDS
Smart cards can be printed with your company brand and card holder details including a photograph. Further security credentials can be printed onto the card including holograms, embossing and microtext. Please visit our Card Personalization page for further information.
